District Profile

Saharanpur district is located in the western part of Uttar Pradesh State. It is in a rectangular shape and it lies between 29 degrees 34 minutes 45 seconds and 30 degrees 21 minutes north latitude and 77 degree 9 minutes and 78 degree 14 minutes 45 seconds east longitude. The district is divided in eleven blocks i.e. Nanauta, Deoband, Rampur, Nagal, Gangoh, Nakur, Baliakheri, Punwarka, Sarsanwa, Muzaffarabad & Sadauli Kadeem covering 1219 villages.

The soil of the district is coarse sandy loam and sandy and a few pockets of clay loam. The PH ranges from 6.8 to 8.2. The underground water is generally good.

Area : 3860 km2. Rivers-7: (Kali, Krishna, Yamuna, Poan Dhoi, Dhamola, Hindan & Gangro).

Rainfall : 945 mm. Temperature: 1.5 - 44.6 oC.

Villages : 1219, Tehsils: 5 (Saharanpur, Nakur, Rampur Maniharan, Deoband & Behat).

Population : 3464228 with density of 898 km-2, Growth rate (2001-11): 16.8%., Sex ratio: 887:1000,

Literacy : 72.03%.

Major Industry : Sugar mill(08), Paper mill, Cigarette and Wood Carving.

Per Capita Income : Rs.1589.99 per month.

Agriculture : Net cultivated area: 3,63,791 ha, Irrigation: 95.4%, Cropping intensity: 200%. 68% population is engaged in agriculture.

Major Crops : Sugarcane (>1,15,000 ha), Wheat(>1,18,000 ha), Rice(>60,000 ha), Mustard, Maize, Groundnut & Blackgram.

Productivity : Sugarcane (573.00 q/ha), Wheat (30.07 q/ha), Rice (23.62 q/ha)

Major Insect-Pest : Shoot Gal Maker & Fruit Fly in Mango, Termite, White Grub and Top Borer in Sugarcane.

Major Diseases : Yellow rust in Wheat, Red rot & GSD in Sugarcane.

Soil Fertility Status : Nitrogen (Low to Medium), Phosphorus (Medium), Potash (Low to Medium.)

Fruits : Mango (25,500 ha) and Guava (22,00 ha). Vegetables: Brinjal, Cabbage and Bottle gourd. Flowers: Marigold.

Animal Husbandry : 7.15 lakhs Livestock.
